Garner Deobald, Cedarlea Farms, Hodgeville was elected president of the Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association at their 109th Annual General Meeting & Convention June 5-7, 2022 in Assiniboia, SK. The Saskatchewan Stock Growers Associaition is a member-driven advocacy organization representing producers interest through education, communication and research focused on an economically and evnironmentally sustainable livestock mareketplace free of industry limiting laws and regulations.

Dr. W. Curt Hagele of Saskatoon, SK passed away June 4th, 2022 at the age of 77. Curt and his children Eric & Michelle had a small Charolais herd and the kids were active in showing and the Junior association growing up. He worked at the Veterinary College when he first moved to Saskatoon and then directed the Saskatoon Embryo Transplant Unit. It was here that he became a specialist in bovine embryo transplanting. In 1987 Curt established his own practice, Embryonics Canada Inc. His expertise in the field of embryo transplanting allowed him the opportunity to travel the world, educating abroad and promoting Canadian cattle genetics.

Owen Cairns won Grand Champion Steer at the May 27th Major (SK) 4-H show. Cole Cairns charcross steer was selected as Reserve Champion Steer by judge Larry Toner. Owen and Cole also won Grand Champion and Reserve Champion honors at the June 1 Kerrobert (SK) Regional 4-H Show judged by Kurtis Reid. Owen’s steer weighed 1490lb and sold to Travis and Tanis Reshney. Coles 1440lb tan steer was purchased by Barrel Oil.
Lexi Wirsta, Elk Point, AB and her K-Cow Bliss 2H (Dogpatch Milestone 2F) with her SOS Apex 139F Pld heifer calf at side won Grand Champion Female at the May 21st, Elk Point 4-H Beef Club Achievement Day. The show was judged by Ty & Shania Dietrich, Forestburg. The following day May 22nd at the St. Paul District 4-H Invitational Heifer Show. Lexi’s pair was crowned Grand Champion Overall Female by judge Dave Viske, Donalda.
Gracie Parsons was selected Grand Champion Steer at the Nebraska 4-H club show May 29 by judges Jessica & Samantha Sperber, Lacombe. Gracie’s steer Silverado was also crowned Supreme District Champion May 30th at the Lacombe (AB) & District 4-H show and sale. The 54 head district steer show was judged by Scott Harvie, Olds. Silverado weighed 1510lb and sold for $6.10/lb to Sterling Industries, Blackfalds.
Denim Parsons Charolais heifer Jazz was selected as Grand Champion Heifer of the Nebraska 4-H Club & Lacombe (AB) District Reserve Champion Heifer at the May 29th show judged by Kody Meier and Alexandra Johnson, Kerrobert, SK. Gracie Parsons Charolais heifer Jewel won Reserve Champion Heifer at the Nebraska 4-H Multi Club show.
Alberta Charolais Breeder Passes
Harold Alexander Taylor of Chauvin, AB passed away May 9th at the Wainwright Auxiliary Hospital at the age of 93 years. A Charolais enthusiast for over 40 years of Poplar Bluff Stock Farm. Harold is survived by his loving wife, Georgina, two children John (Kirsten)Taylor, Janice (Kevin) Wirsta along with four grandchildren Brad Taylor, Garret Taylor, Kailey Wirsta, Lexi Wirsta and three great grandchildren, Cooper, Rosalie, Gracelynn. Harold was predeceased by his parents, Alex and Jessie; one brother, Robert Taylor.
Keeping with Harold’s wishes cremation has taken place and no public formal services will be conducted. If so desired the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Wainwright Auxiliary Hospital Patient Comfort Fund or to the charity of the donors choice.
Charolais Win Holden 4-H Show
Tuf Bratrud’s Charolais heifer WGD Miss Tiffany 34J (Reese Duke 239D daughter) won Grand Champion Heifer and Supreme Female at the April 30 Holden (AB) 4-H Beef Show. The 23 head female show was judged by Will Bradford.
Jayden Chomik won Grand Champion Steer at the Holden 4-H Beef Club Achievement Day. The 15 head steer show was judged by Will Bradford. Jayden’s steer Don weighed 1595lb and sold for $2.25/lb to D2 Electric, Camrose and R&C Yuha Farms, Rosalind.
