Charolais Sired Steer Wins Reserve

Nattalie Kroetsch, Bawlf (AB) Charolais sired steer was selected Reserve Grand Champion by judge Dennis Mercier at the May 22 Rosalind 4-H Achievement day. Nattalie and her steer also won Reserve Grand Champion at the Camrose & District 4-H Show and Sale held June 6th in Bashaw. The 45 head show was judged by Bevin Hamilton. Nattalie’s steer weighed 1377lb and sold for $5.00/lb to Benchmark Commodities, Ponoka.

Early Charolais Breeder Passs

Gerald Lewis, passed away suddenly on June 8, 2023 at Heritage Acres at the age of 84. Gerald is survived by his loving wife Marlene, his six children: Geralyn and Ken Nichols, Joan and Stephen Paddison, Murray and Laura Lewis, Sheldon and Larissa Lewis, Shauna and John Botwood and Rosanne and Stuart Shiell.
Gerald & Marlene started the Charolais herd at Char-Lew Ranch over 50 years ago and received the 50 year membership award at this year’s CCA AGM. The cattle herd is now operated by Sheldon & Larissa & grandson Brant & Renita. A Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 pm on Thursday, June 15, 2023, at the Pincher Creek Community Hall.

Howe elected Chairman of the FCCF Board

Kelly Howe, Moose Jaw, SK was elected Chairman of the Friends of Canadian Charolais Foundation board of directors at their Annual General Meeting held June 11th in Innisfail, AB. Keith Black, Foresters Falls, ON was elected Vice-Chairman; Jeralyn Rasmussen, Innisfail, Secretary-Treasurer and Helge By, Regina, SK President. Newly elected to the board were Dennis Serhienko, Maymont, SK; Dwein Trask, Saskatoon, SK; Mike Elder, Coronach, SK & Mark Frost, Kingsey Falls, QC.
Following the CCA Presidents Dinner the FCCF Fundraising Auction raised $84,725.

Airey Elected President of the CCA

Shawn Airey, Rivers, MB was elected President of the Canadian Charolais Association at their Annual General Meeting held June 11th, 2023 in Innisfail, AB. Ryan Nesbitt, Nestleton, ON moved to 1st Vice-President; Josh Taylor, Dunsford, ON is 2nd Vice-President and Kasey Phillips, Waskatenau went to Past-President. Rounding out the board of directors are Jeff Cavers, LaRiviere, MB; Rod McLeod, Rockyview County; Josh Redden, Windsor, NS; Darwin Rosso, Moose Jaw, SK; Armand Roy, St-Bernard Lacolle, QC; Travis Foot, Esther with Craig Scott being the General Manager. Current Canadian Charolais Director Passes

Lorne Lakusta of Spruce View Charolais, Andrew, AB passed away May 26th after a battle with cancer at the age of 56. Lorne is survived by his loving family, his wife of 34 years, Effie; son Lyle and daughter Larissa (Matthew) MacIsaac and their daughter Loclynn Lauren. A member of the Canadian Charolais Association for over 30 years he has been a CCA director since 2017. A funeral service will be held, Monday, June 5th at 10:30 at the Andrew Community Centre 5401 – 51st Avenue.
